Book a golf break in Scotland and stay at the superb The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links. Set in the dunes of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides, The Machrie Links course is one of the most beautiful locations in world golf. Originally designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, the course has now been fully modernised by D J Russell, the former European tour player.

There is a reason why the Scots invented golf on links land, Machrie land, and the links turf on which the course sits is among the finest in Scotland. The dramatic setting of Laggan Bay and the sand dunes has few equals, and with the ever changing nature of the challenge offered by this acclaimed layout it’s time you played the Machrie!

The Machrie is Islay’s newest hotel. Opened summer 2018, The Machrie has undergone an extensive refurbishment that has lovingly restored the original building and fused it with the striking architecture of the new areas. Whether on the ground or first floor, all our rooms have unobstructed views of the island’s peat plains, the Mull of Oa or the green of our links and the Atlantic Ocean. 4 new lodges have also been added onto the links and offer more private accommodation only a minute’s walk from the main building.

The following amenities are available in all the rooms and suites:

  • Flatscreen TV
  • In room safe
  • Desk & multi-plug charging station

The Golf

Originally constructed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, who believed it was 'the best ground for a golf course that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing'.

The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links 6

Apart from a few changes made by Donald Steel in the 80’s, the course remains very much the same as when Willie Campbell first constructed it. It is a traditional links course and, when playing, you get the feeling of going back in time to the days of Harry Vardon and John Taylor.

The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links 7

The Machrie's main claim to fame is its own 'Open Championship' of 1901 which included the Great Triumvirate of Harry Vardon, John Henry Taylor and James Braid.

The course has remained virtually the same with sand dunes providing natural hazards that will challenge most golfers. And with the winds that come off the Atlantic, even the most experienced of golfers will find something testing about the course.

The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links

Although the weather can be a handicap, there are times when it is an advantage. Because Islay lies in the Gulf Stream, the climate is such that the course does not suffer the same levels of snow and frost that is problematic for other courses and consequently play is possible virtually all year round. Indeed, the winter turf is unique to the Machrie and golf is even made easier.

The aim is to provide a course that is suitable for the modern golfer but retaining the traditional quality so that you appreciate the magical feeling of walking in the shoes of bygone golfing greats.

The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links 4

A less demanding six hole course is also available for the less experienced. This course is much less physically demanding. The Machrie Golf course has 18 holes and is located at a stunning location, close to Islay Airport, and the Big Strand. A 9 mile stretch of unspoilt beach with superb views over Loch Indaal and the Oa Peninsula.
