Real Club Valderrama

Overview

Experience the Real Club Valderrama golf course in Sotogrande, Costa del Sol. This course is consistently ranked the number one golf course in Spain and Continental Europe. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., it opened in 1974 and was redesigned in 1985. The private club allows visitors to enjoy its 18-hole, par-71 championship layout, about 6,390 meters (6,990 yards) from the back tees.

Real Club Valderrama Layout and Challenges

The course has a classic parkland design framed by ancient cork oak trees along each fairway. The fairways are narrow and require accurate shots, while the fast, uneven greens make putting challenging.

Bunkers, water hazards, and subtle elevation changes make the course tough but interesting. Golfers of all skill levels enjoy the design, which offers different ways to play each hole, but little room for mistakes. The result is one of the most intellectually demanding yet fair golf experiences in the world.

Signature Holes

Two par-5 holes stand above all others. The 4th hole, La Cascada, is considered by Robert Trent Jones Sr. as one of his best. A waterfall runs next to a two-tiered green protected by water on the right and an overhanging cork oak on the left. Getting to the green in two shots needs both strength and accuracy.

The 17th hole, Los Gabilones, was redesigned by Seve Ballesteros for the 1997 Ryder Cup. There is a big pond in front of the green, making it a challenging hole. Many famous moments in golf have happened here, like when Tiger Woods’ famous triple-bogey eight during the 1999 WGC-American Express Championship.

Facilities at Real Club Valderrama

Beyond the golf course, Real Club Valderrama has many high-quality facilities. The Spanish-style clubhouse has comfortable lounges and large terraces with panoramic views. It also has two dining options: the Valderrama Restaurant and the Spike Bar.

There are separate locker rooms for men and women, each with lockers, showers, and nice amenities. The practice area is considered one of the best in Europe, with a short-game area, golf lessons, and a pro shop.

Hosted Tournaments

Valderrama is well known for hosting prestigious golf events. It hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, the first held in continental Europe. The club has also held the Volvo Masters 16 times from 1988 to 2008, the WGC-American Express Championship in 1999 and 2000, the Andalucía Valderrama Masters eight times since 2010, and, since 2023, the LIV Golf Andalucía event.
