Royal North Devon Golf Club
Overview
Royal North Devon Golf Club is located in Westward Ho!, North Devon, and it is the oldest golf course in England, founded in 1864. This historic course is often called the “St Andrews of the South.” It offers a true links golfing experience. With its natural landscape, firm fairways, and the constant coastal wind, it’s a place for golfers who want to enjoy both history and a good challenge.
Course Layout
Designed by Old Tom Morris, the course remains largely unchanged since the 19th century. It stretches across common land within the Northam Burrows Country Park, blending with the surrounding dunes and grazing sheep. The par-72 layout spans just over 6,600 yards from the back tees, offering a stern but fair test for golfers of all abilities.
Challenges of the Course
Royal North Devon is shaped by nature instead of machines. You’ll find rolling fairways, quick grass, tricky bunkers, and native plants that can really challenge your shots. The wind from Bideford Bay adds extra difficulty, making it important to choose the right club. Good course management is key here, as the design favours smart strategy and accuracy over just hitting the ball hard.
Signature Holes
The par-3 4th hole, known as “Cape,” is a standout. With a carry over marshland and a green framed by sand dunes, it demands accuracy. The 17th hole, “Lundy,” a long par-4 with a blind tee shot and an angled green, is a thrilling penultimate test. Each hole offers a unique challenge and contributes to the course’s rich character.
Facilities
The clubhouse offers a warm welcome and views of the course and coastline. Inside, you’ll find a pro shop, locker rooms, and a traditional bar and restaurant. The club also boasts a practice area and short game facilities to help you prepare for your round.
Tournaments and History
Royal North Devon Golf Club has held many amateur golf events, like the British Boys’ Championship and local qualifiers. It is still a lively spot for amateur golf and has a long, proud history. The club’s museum highlights this rich past and displays items from famous players.
