RTJ Golf Trail at Grand National

Overview

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National is one of the best public golf courses in Alabama. It features a 54-hole course located near Lake Saugahatchee in Opelika. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who called it the best natural golf site he had ever seen, this course is often rated as the top public golf course in America by Golf World readers.

With 32 holes right next to the lake, Grand National offers a beautiful and fun golfing experience that many people love, especially those looking for a challenging round of golf in the Southeast. Whether you’re planning a weekend trip or a corporate event, this location showcases excellent golf course design and great amenities.

RTJ Course Layout

The layout features three unique golf courses, each designed to take advantage of the natural beauty of the land.

The Lake Course is a championship course that is par-72 and stretches up to 7,289 yards. With 12 holes located by the water, it offers beautiful views and challenging elevation changes. Golfers will need to be precise to navigate its pristine fairways.

The Links Course has recently been updated with new tees, bunkers, and TifEagle Ultradwarf greens. Also a par-72, this course has an open and rolling design that reflects the traditional links style while showcasing lovely views of the lake.

Finally, they have the Short Course, which is an 18-hole par-3 layout. Over half of the holes are near the lake. It’s perfect for practising or enjoying a casual game, with hole lengths ranging from 40 to 140 yards. Whether you’re looking to build your skills or just have fun, this course offers a great experience!

RTJ Course Challenges

The Grand National is full of challenges, making it tough for golfers of all skill levels. Water hazards are a big part of the strategy, especially with Lake Saugahatchee affecting shot choices on many holes and punishing bad shots. The winds can be tricky, especially on open tees and greens, while the hilly terrain makes it important to choose the right clubs and plan your shots wisely. Bunkers and tricky greens add to the difficulty, ensuring that even skilled players have to think carefully to score well on these challenging golf courses in Alabama.

Signature Holes

One of the most famous holes at RTJ Grand National is the par-3 15th hole on the Lake Course. It measures 230 yards and features an island green surrounded by water. The wind and distance make it an exciting challenge, and many consider it one of the most beautiful and toughest par-3 holes in the area.

On the Links Course, the par-3 3rd hole is also a highlight. At 206 yards, it requires players to hit their shots accurately over water and bunkers. Both of these holes showcase what makes RTJ Grand National special, combining stunning views with smart strategy.
