Layout of the Mussenden Links and Bann Course

Castlerock Golf Club began as a nine-hole course in April 1901. In 1908, the club leased more land and expanded to eighteen holes. Ben Sayers designed the new layout, which opened in 1909. Harry Colt later provided consultation on redesigns around 1930.

The championship Mussenden Links measures up to 6,780 yards from the blue tees and plays as a par 73. The layout features a mix of holes that test every aspect of the game across undulating linksland.

The Bann Course is a testing yet enjoyable nine-hole links measuring 2,446 yards from the white tees and playing to a par of 34. It offers stunning views out onto the River Bann and over to Donegal. Do not let its length deceive you; it provides a genuine challenge in its own right.

Challenges of Playing the Links

Both courses demand precision, distance control, and strategic thinking. Coastal conditions, including wind, influence club selection throughout the round.

Elevated greens, strategic bunkering, dunes, and contours require careful shot placement. Out-of-bounds areas and well-defended putting surfaces leave little margin for error on key holes.

Signature Holes at Castlerock Golf Club

The 4th hole (par 3) on the Mussenden Course, named Leg O’Mutton, is 200 yards from the blue tees. It presents a real test of precision and distance control, with out-of-bounds left and right and a well-bunkered green that offers no room for error.

The 7th hole (par 4), Armchair, is the stroke index 1 and 418 yards. Strategic bunkering plays into the constant wind, and the elevated green is guarded by a dune on the left.

The 9th hole (stunning par 3), Quarry, is 214 yards and finishes the front nine. The green sits between surrounding dunes, requiring a decision to carry the ball onto the narrow surface or use the left-side contours to feed the ball onto the putting surface.

Hosted Tournaments

Castlerock Golf Club has a long history of hosting golf tournaments. It has hosted the Irish PGA Championship several times.

In 2023, the club co-hosted the ISPS Honda World Invitational, a joint DP World Tour and Ladies European Tour event, alongside Galgorm Castle.
