Lee Westwood Colt Course
Overview
Play golf at the Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House Golf Club. This 18-hole championship course is located in the Tyne Valley near Newcastle. Designed by Scott Macpherson and Lee Westwood, it opened in 2011 and is inspired by Harry Colt’s classic “Old English” style.
The parkland course is about 7,000 yards from the championship tees with a par of 71. It’s ranked among the UK’s top 100 golf courses. It offers one of the most varied and strategic challenges in the country.
Lee Westwood Colt Course Layout and Challenges
The Lee Westwood Colt Course is on a hillside with slopes and flat areas. Golfers will encounter multiple climbs (notably on holes 2, 5, 7, and 10). There are also several downhill holes, including the 6th, 8th, and 13th.
The fairways are wide, making it easier if you hit the ball straight, but centre-line hazards, bunkers, and natural contours that require careful shots. The front nine blends uphill tests with flowing downhill. The back nine is flatter and features traditional parkland terrain.
Signature Holes
Several holes make the course exciting. The 9th hole is a par 3 played over water to a green surrounded by bunkers. The 13th offers a downhill drive on a wide fairway, where position is key to attacking the pin.
The 15th is the hardest hole, with a tight, blind drive over water and a brow. The 18th is a par 4, with water guarding the front and right of the green, along with a ha-ha wall and a preserved historic ice lake, making it both beautiful and challenging.
Ancient features enhance the experience, including woodland beside the 1st, a Roman fort near the 11th, and scenic views across the Tyne Valley from elevated tees.

Close House has great facilities for golfers. There is a PGA Academy and driving range with Toptracer technology. There are also practice greens, bunkers, and a short 9-hole Yearling Course.
