Retreat Course

Overview

Located at Sea Island Resort in Georgia, the Retreat Course is a golf course for players of all skill levels. Redesigned in 2001 by Davis Love III and Mark Love, this par-72 championship layout is about 6,800 yards from the blue tees.

It has natural woodlands, coastal scenery, and a strategic layout for an enjoyable game. As one of three courses at Sea Island Golf Club, the Retreat Course is known for its open feel and balance of challenge and playability, making it a good choice for anyone looking for the best golf courses in Georgia.

Layout of the Retreat Course at Sea Island

The Retreat Course, a tree-lined parkland design, is surrounded by tall Georgia longleaf pines and native oaks.

The fairways are wider, and the course is 300 yards longer than the other Sea Island courses, Seaside and Plantation. The 18 holes feature a mix of open holes and tree-lined paths, with water hazards on nine holes and bunkers that require thoughtful shot planning.

Yardages vary by tee (from 5,082 to 7,106 yards), making it suitable for players of many skill levels. Slope ratings range from 117 to 135, making the course challenging but still friendly for most golfers.

Challenges on the Retreat Golf Course at Sea Island

Golfers face a dynamic set of challenges that highlight accuracy, strategy, and adaptability. You need to hit your shots accurately to avoid bunkers and water hazards. Getting the ball onto the green can be hard because of the sloping, tiered greens with valleys, swales, and false fronts.

Wind influences play on longer par fours, and you can take chances on certain holes to try for a better score. Even though it can be tough, the Retreat Course is still enjoyable for beginners thanks to its wide fairways and multiple tee choices.

Signature Holes

Some of the most memorable parts of the course are its signature holes, which define its character.

Hole 6 is a short par-4, just 321 yards from the blue tees. Long hitters can attempt to drive the green in one shot, while others may choose to play it safe and set up their next shot. The three-tiered green with a central valley challenges putting accuracy.

Hole 8 is a par-5, 533 yards long, with left-side bunkers and a big lake near the green. If you play boldly, you can try for a birdie, but there are risks involved.

Facilities at Sea Island Golf Club

The nearby Golf Performance Centre offers lessons from experts. Sea Island Resort also has a top-rated spa, a beach club, and restaurants, making it a good place for a golf holiday.

Hosted Tournaments

While the Seaside and Plantation courses usually host the RSM Classic, the Retreat Course also plays host to various events. It has hosted the Mizuno Junior Championship, US Am Tour events, the Georgia State Golf Association’s Mixed Team Championship, and the Sea Island Pro-Am.

These events show that the course is great for both amateur and professional golfers. The course is known as a beautiful place to play golf on Georgia’s coast.
