Apple Rock Golf Course

Overview

Located in the Texas Hill Country, Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort is a top spot for golfers. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., this championship layout is part of the exclusive “Texas Triangle”. It’s the only set like it in the continental United States.

The course covers 147 acres, is a par-72, and measures 6,999 yards from the longest tees. It has a course rating of 75.4 and a slope of 136, making it enjoyable and fair for golfers of all abilities.

Course Layout

The course starts in hilly, rocky terrain and then moves to the back part by the shores of Lake LBJ. High-quality Bermuda fairways and Bentgrass greens are smooth and well-kept, making play easier.

Native granite-lined streambeds and large oak and elm trees add to the area’s beauty. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, the course uses the highest spots on the land for great views of the countryside.

Course Challenges

Golfers face many different challenges on the course. There are more than 50 bunkers, and water comes into play on seven holes. The course has hills and slopes, with some fairways and multi-tiered greens.

Doglegs and reachable par-5s test decision-making, giving players choices. For example, steep slopes on holes like the par-4 sixth and par-5 seventh mean golfers need to plan their shots to avoid uphill lies or bunkered approaches.

These features make Apple Rock a welcoming yet formidable challenge for both experienced and casual players.

Signature Holes

Among the signature holes with lake views at Apple Rock Golf Course is the 12th, a par-3.

It is 179 yards from the back tees and requires a precise shot over a watery inlet to a green close to Lake LBJ. The green is mostly watered and has steep slopes with four levels. Players need to choose their clubs wisely to get past the front bunker and water hazard without the ball rolling off the green.

The par-5 holes 10 and 11 both descend from raised tees toward Lake LBJ. Hole 10 offers players panoramic views from the high tee box and a plateaued fairway. Hitting to the left side helps on the next shot.

The 11th hole is harder for players who hit far, offering choices to go over a right-side bunker, but includes out-of-bounds on the right, a lateral penalty area on the left, and water guarding the green short and left.

Hole 18 is a dogleg-left par-4. Trees are lined on the left, and fairway bunkers are on the right. The green is raised and has additional bunkers around it, so players need to be accurate with their first and second shots to finish well.

Apple Rock shows off some of the best golf facilities in Texas and is open only to resort guests. The Cap Rock Cabana and Clubhouse offer private dining, a pool, and panoramic views of the course. The golf shop sells high-quality clubs, clothing, and other gear.
