The Alto Golf Club Sotogrande
Overview
The Alto Golf Club Sotogrande is a championship golf course in Costa del Sol. Located at the peak of the Sotogrande hillside next to Los Alcornocales Natural Park, this parkland course offers a mix of enjoyable play, beautiful scenery, and luxury hospitality. Whether you want a memorable round of golf in Sotogrande or a full golf holiday, The Alto Club is a great choice.
The Alto Golf Club Sotogrande Layout and Design
The Alto Golf Club Sotogrande is an 18-hole, par-71 golf course first designed by Dave Thomas and later updated by Manuel Piñero. The course follows the natural contours of the terrain.
It has two nines: the front nine (Los Pinos), which runs through umbrella pine-lined fairways with elevation changes and strategic bunkering, and the back nine (Los Lagos), which features lakes that add both visual appeal and tactical depth.
Golfers will find a balanced mix of narrow, tree-lined holes that require precision off the tee and more open holes that reward course management. The fairways curve across the hillside, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The championship tees are about 6,497 metres, while standard white tees are around 5,903 metres. Changes in height, bunkers, and water hazards highlight accuracy, creativity, and shot-shaping over sheer power.
Signature Holes and Challenges
One of the most memorable parts of the course is Hole 13. It is a par 5, about 461 yards from the regular tees, offering classic risk-reward opportunities. Water runs along the right side of the fairway and near the green, making bold shots risky.
Other challenges include tight, pine-flanked drives on the Pinos nine and multiple water-influenced holes on the Lagos nine. Choosing the right club and managing the wind are important.
The course rewards steady play and creative shots. It’s a favourite for golfers who enjoy a strategic yet enjoyable golf experience in Sotogrande.
