Matfen Hall Golf Course
Overview
Experience championship golf at Matfen Hall Golf Course, a place for anyone who wants to play golf in Northumberland. The course sits within 300 acres of historic heritage parkland surrounding a 5-star country house hotel. It offers a fun and memorable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
Matfen Hall Golf Course Layout and Design
Matfen Hall has 27 holes arranged across three nine-hole courses: Douglas, Standing Stone, and Dewlaw. You can mix and match these to create different 18-hole games.
The main course, usually Douglas and Standing Stone, is about 6,500 to 6,700 yards long with a par of 72.
The course follows the natural contours of the Northumberland countryside and uses the land’s features to make the game interesting without being overly difficult to understand.
Mature woodland, fast-flowing River Pont crossings, and a dry-stone Ha-Ha wall define the character. Fairways wind through parkland, offering scenic views and a sense of seclusion, shared only with local wildlife such as deer, hawks, and swans.
GPS-enabled buggies enhance navigation and comfort, making the course accessible while testing precision and course management.
Challenges and Signature Holes
The course rewards thoughtful play with a mix of risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards, particularly the River Pont, come into play on multiple holes, requiring accurate carries and good planning. The dry-stone Ha-Ha protects a postage-stamp green, adding a memorable challenge that reflects the estate’s heritage.
The most famous hole is the long 17th, a par 3 of about 179 yards. Its green is narrow and close to the River Pont, so you need precise club selection and to stay calm. Other highlights are par-4 and par-5 holes that test length and accuracy, with the dogleg 16th as a strong par-5.
Matfen Hall Facilities
Beyond the golf course, Matfen Hall has great facilities. The Keepers Lodge overlooks the parkland and includes a restaurant, bar, pro shop, locker rooms, and The Golf Lab. In The Golf Lab, you can use Foresight Hawk simulators, a laser-guided teaching studio, and custom fitting services.
Additional facilities include a 10-bay Toptracer driving range, a high-quality 9-hole par-3 course ideal for warm-ups or relaxed play, and short-game practice areas. PGA professionals provide coaching, while luxury on-site accommodation and spa access create perfect stay-and-play packages.
