Aberdovey Golf Club

Overview

Located on Cardigan Bay in Gwynedd, Wales, Aberdovey Golf Club is perfect for golfers looking for a true links experience. Established in 1892, this historic course is one of the top golf clubs in Wales. With a championship layout that has players for over a hundred years, Aberdovey is ranked among the Top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland. It recently earned the third spot in Wales according to National Club Golfer. Aberdovey offers more than just a game; it provides a chance to enjoy the beautiful Welsh coastline while playing golf.

Course Layout at Aberdovey Golf Club

This golf course is a great James Braid design, an 18-hole links layout. It has been improved with new tee boxes, stretching 6,777 yards from the back tees, and is a par 71. The course covers 150 acres of sand dunes and open land. The strong winds from the Irish Sea influence every shot.

There are shorter tee options for players of all skill levels, including ladies’ tees that measure 5,258 yards with a par of 74. The course is located between the historic Cambrian railway and high sand dunes, making it both beautiful and challenging. It requires careful strategy rather than just strength, highlighting the true spirit of traditional links golf in Wales.

Course Challenges at Aberdovey Golf Club

Aberdovey presents many challenges, where nature itself can be the main opponent. Strong winds from the bay can turn a simple par 4 into a hard test. The quick, sloped greens reward those who take bold shots but can be tough on players who hesitate. Deep hollows, grassy ditches, and natural bunkers are scattered across the course, making recovery shots a real challenge. The nearby railway adds an extra-difficult edge to the game. Yet, it’s this mix of elements—windy fairways, hidden shots, and hard slopes—that makes Aberdovey a top-notch golf course, encouraging players to be adaptable and skilled with their shots.

Signature Holes

Signature holes etch themselves into memory, each a testament to the course’s storied design. The third, a 173-yard par 3 known as “Cader,” requires a blind tee shot over a vast hill shored by railway sleepers to a diminutive green cradled in sand—a favourite of Bernard Darwin and one of Wales’ most iconic short holes.

Hole 12, the club’s crown jewel at 149 yards, demands a daring carry over dunes to an elevated green perched 30 feet above the beach, with out-of-bounds lurking right for the errant strike. The 16th, a drivable 288-yard par 4 dubbed the “Railway Hole,” hugs the tracks in a leftward dogleg, tempting aggressive drivers amid crosswinds and humps.

Rounding out the drama, the 17th par 3 climbs 60 feet over 176 yards to a plateau green, while the 443-yard 18th—a stout finisher—flirts with ditches left and bunkers right, offering clubhouse views as your reward.
