Boavista Golf Course

Overview

Boavista Golf Course is an 18-hole championship golf course at the Boavista Golf & Spa Resort in Lagos, Portugal. Designed by Howard Swan and opened in 2002, this par-71 course fits well with the land’s natural contours.

With championship tees stretching 6,145 metres, the course offers a fair challenge for players of all skill levels and highlights the beautiful scenery of the western Algarve.

Boavista Course Layout and Design

The course has two distinctive sections that make the game interesting. The outward nine holes ascend gradually through sub-tropical vegetation and properties, ending at the high 9th tee. Golfers can see panoramic views of the Bay of Lagos and the Serra de Monchique hills to the north.

The inward nine descend toward an area rich in water courses, lakes, and bridges, where abundant gardens enhance the parkland setting. The wide fairways, rolling greens, and strategic bunkering combine to reward accurate shot-making throughout.

Course Challenges

The Boavista Golf Course layout offers players interesting challenges that require skill and flexibility. On holes 6 and 8, golfers must hit their shots across a natural ravine, introducing risk-reward elements. Coastal winds frequently influence club selection and ball flight.

Water hazards on holes 14, 15, and 17 test decision-making under pressure. The variety of hole shapes and the integration of the surrounding landscape ensure the course remains engaging yet fair for mid-to-low handicappers.

Signature Holes at Boavista Golf Course

Several standout holes define the character of the Boavista Golf Course in Lagos. The 7th hole, a par-4, is the signature hole. It offers great views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Monchique hills, creating one of the most memorable vistas in the Algarve.

The 6th hole, a par-3 called the Cliff Hole, delivers a tee shot across the ravine with ocean views. Near the end, the 14th hole, a par-5, presents a lengthy water-guarded challenge. The 18th hole ends with a replica of the Swilken Bridge from St Andrews, providing a fitting finale.
