Cardrona Golf Course
Overview
Cardrona Golf Course at Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, located in the Tweed Valley of the Scottish Borders, offers a great golfing experience for all golfers. This 18-hole championship course, designed by Dave Thomas in 2001, stretches up to 7,010 yards from the back tees with a par of 72.
The course is set in parkland, woodland, and moorland, making it a stunning and enjoyable place to play golf. Whether you play from the championship tees or the shorter front markers at 6,139 yards, everyone can enjoy a great game while experiencing high-quality play.
Course Layout on the Cardrona Golf Course
The layout at Cardrona Golf Course features rolling hills, winding fairways, and natural obstacles that require careful shot selection. The holes wind through beautiful landscapes. This includes some that cross the River Tweed on a lovely bridge, adding to the charming Scottish experience.
On the front nine, golfers will find wide fairways with some bunkers, while the back nine opens up to stunning mountain views, featuring fir trees and old stone walls that create a real sense of the countryside.
Course Challenges
This course is challenging, but it’s fair for players of all skill levels. The wind can make the holes feel longer, so golfers need to be careful about how far they hit the ball and choose their clubs wisely. There are bunkers around the greens that follow USGA rules, and while the greens are large, they have hard slopes that favour precise shots over just hitting hard.
There are also water hazards and areas where you can hit out of bounds. This creates interesting shot choices, especially on the par-5 holes, where you might need to carry over water. Golfers will encounter elevation changes, making some shots play farther than they appear, which tests both their skills and focus.
Standout Holes at Cardrona Golf Course
Cardrona is a must-play course for its signature holes. The 7th hole, called Kailzie Corner, can really challenge your game. It’s a par-4 dogleg with trees and water along the right side, a fairway bunker on the left, and a raised green that needs accurate shots.
Another memorable hole is the 5th, known as Heron’s Rest. This par-3 hole has a huge bunker that can be pretty scary from the tee. It’s important to hit high, soft shots to land on the shallow green.
The 16th hole, Pikesknowe, features a striking tunnel-like fairway surrounded by tall banks and pine trees. This leads to a green that’s not too well protected, giving players a chance to score.
Finally, the 18th hole, called Salmon Leap, presents challenges with bunkers in the fairway and a raised green that tends to play a bit longer, making for an exciting finish to your round.
