Carne Golf Links

Overview

Located along the Wild Atlantic Way in Belmullet, Carne Golf Links is a golf course known for its real links golf experience. This 27-hole course is often considered one of the best in Ireland, attracting players with its beautiful scenery and challenges.

Designed by Eddie Connaughton and Des Smyth in 1992, the original 18 holes blend perfectly into the world’s largest dune system. From the course, you can enjoy scenic views of the wild Atlantic Ocean. In 2020, they added the Kilmore Nine, expanding the course to 27 holes. This change allows for many different ways to play, making each round of golf unique.

Whether you choose to play the traditional 18 holes or try out the full 27, Carne Golf Links keeps its natural look and feel. This course truly connects you with Ireland’s coastline and its untouched beauty.

The course layout at Carne Golf Links offers a unique and exciting golfing experience. The course is lined with tall dunes that create beautiful landscapes and require careful shots. The front nine holes are easier, helping players get used to the playing conditions with gentle slopes and well-placed bunkers. As you move to the back nine, the excitement increases. The course is about 6,800 yards long and plays quickly, with tricky shots and high tees that challenge confident players.

At Carne Golf Links, golfers face the elements head-on. Strong winds from the Atlantic can make even an easy hole feel tough, and deep bunkers hidden in the grass add to the challenge. The greens are often set on top of dunes, making approach shots even more interesting. This course is perfect for those who enjoy strategic play; it’s about planning your moves rather than just hitting hard. Both skilled amateurs and professionals can find a challenge here. With ever-changing winds and unpredictable bounces, every game feels fresh and exciting, keeping the spirit of traditional links golf alive.

When you talk about the signature holes at Carne Golf Links, you can’t miss the par-4 11th hole. This 363-yard challenge starts from the 10th green and offers stunning views of the ocean. The fairway is narrow, with steep sand dunes on both sides, making players want to hit aggressive drives. But be careful! A stray shot can end up in thick rough, which is tough to play from.

The par-3 16th hole is also unforgettable. It’s a drop-shot hole where you have to hit over a big gap to a small green that hangs on the edge of the cliff. It’s all about making a precise shot here!

Almost every hole at Carne has its own unique charm. From the hidden tee on the 5th to the challenging dune-filled 17th, each hole captures the spirit of Scotland’s best golf courses, mixed beautifully with the wild character of Mayo in Ireland.

The facilities at Carne Golf Links make your visit comfortable. The modern clubhouse offers a great view of the dunes and serves Irish food. You’ll find a pro shop with top-quality clothes and equipment. There are also great practice areas, including a driving range, putting green, and sand traps, where you can sharpen your skills just like you will on the course.

Hosted Tournaments

Tournaments held at Carne Golf Links highlight its reputation as a great place for competitive golf. The course hosted the Irish PGA Championship in 2021. Events like the Vermilion Energy Carne Pro-Am and the Atlantic Coast Challenge, a three-day team competition with Carne, Enniscrone, and County Sligo, attract golfers from around the world.
