Cougar Point Golf Course
Overview
Welcome to Cougar Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island, a top choice for golfers looking for a great experience on South Carolina’s coast. Created by Gary Player and updated in 2017, this 18-hole, par-72 championship course stretches up to 6,875 yards from the back tees. It features a balanced layout that suits players of all skill levels.
Course Layout
The front nine holes wind through live oak trees and nearby homes, offering tree-lined fairways and gentle hills. The back nine takes you through marshlands and showcases stunning coastal views, making it both visually appealing and challenging. This thoughtful design mixes natural elements, including tidal marshes and the Kiawah River, creating a perfect blend of fun and nature’s beauty.
Course Challenges
Playing at Cougar Point Golf Course can be challenging but fun. You need to make precise shots and think carefully about your decisions. There are water hazards, like ponds and marshes, on several holes, along with bunkers placed on the fairways. The wind can also change how your shots fly.
The greens have subtle slopes, so it’s important to aim your approach shots well, especially on the shorter par-4 holes. These holes require careful planning to avoid trees and get the best angles to the pin. The longer par-4 holes provide plenty of room to land your ball, but will test how well you control your distance.
There are also par-5 holes that bring some excitement with a risk-reward element, inviting players to take some chances. Overall, the course is fair yet challenging, making it accessible while still providing a competitive experience.
Signature Holes
At Cougar Point Golf Course, one of the most exciting parts is the three holes from 4 to 6. These holes have beautiful views of the marsh and the Kiawah River.
Hole 4 is a long par-4 that can be up to 458 yards. It has a dogleg that bends along the river, with bunkers and marsh areas that make it important to hit your drives and approaches accurately.
Hole 5 is another par-4, and then there’s Hole 6, which is a stunning par-3. Both of these greens stretch into the marsh, giving you amazing views, but you have to be careful as you hit over natural hazards.
Another notable hole is Hole 17. This par-4 measures 366 yards and is known as one of the most beautiful and challenging holes on the island. Water runs along the right side, giving players a choice to play it safe or take a risk by hitting over bunkers and ponds.
These holes show how Cougar Point Golf Course combines great looks with interesting challenges.
