East Course
Overview
Play golf at the East Course, Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club. Designed by James Braid in 1927, this championship parkland layout is only seven miles from Edinburgh city centre. Located on a 1,000-acre country estate near the Pentland Hills, the East Course offers beautiful scenery, a fun challenge, and great facilities.
Course Layout and Challenges
Nicknamed ‘The Beast’, the East Course is challenging for golfers at any level. It requires both power and a precise short game. The par-73 course is 7,400 yards from the Championship tees, but golfers usually play a shorter, 6,684-yard version. With wide, mostly easy fairways, players can hit long drives. Bunkers designed by James Braid add extra challenge.
The large greens make it easier to aim for well-placed approach shots. The course goes through parkland with mature woodland, hills, and scenic views. A 2005 renovation enhanced its championship credentials, making it more engaging while retaining its original design.
Signature Holes
Following the 2005 renovation, the 13th and 14th holes, carved through the trees, became signature holes. These tighter tests feature narrower fairways and many hazards, requiring precision and thoughtful shot selection.
They complement the 18th hole, which offers a memorable closing challenge as it approaches the historic clubhouse.
The longer par-4 holes use trees and hazards to make the game harder. Short holes with bunkers also test players’ ability to hit the ball accurately and to plan their shots.
