Glendower Golf Club
Overview
Located in Edenvale in Johannesburg, Glendower Golf Club is one of South Africa’s best golf courses. Opened in 1937, this parkland course mixes classic design with modern care, making it a favourite for both new and experienced golfers. Known for its beautiful fairways, quick greens, and tricky holes, Glendower is celebrated as one of the top golf spots in the country.
Course Layout
The layout at Glendower Golf Club stretches to just over 7,500 yards from the championship tees. It features a traditional 18-hole, par-72 setup that rewards precision over power. Trees, bunkers, and water hazards on 11 holes demand accuracy from the tee and strategy on the greens. The undulations and fairways keep golfers thinking on every shot, while the bentgrass greens roll fast and true.
Standout Holes
One of the signature holes is the par-3 15th. Measuring around 180 yards, it requires a precise tee shot over water to a narrow green guarded by bunkers. Another standout is the par-5 13th, which doglegs right and tempts long hitters to take on the water in two for a birdie chance. Each hole offers a unique challenge, with a strong finishing stretch that tests every aspect of your game.
Tournaments
Glendower Golf Club is known for hosting the South African Open Championship several times. This event brings in top players from around the world, showing off the club’s course. It often ranks as one of the best golf courses in South Africa and is a favourite on the Sunshine Tour.
Facilities
At the golf course, you’ll find the clubhouse facilities. Golfers can take advantage of a modern pro shop, a great practice range, and a short-game area. There’s also a restaurant and bar that looks out over the 18th green. Whether you’re playing in a tournament or just having fun with friends, Glendower provides a fantastic golfing experience.
