Gullane No.3 Golf Course

Overview

Gullane No.3 Golf Course opened in 1910 and is known as Gullane’s Gem at Gullane Golf Club. The course is in East Lothian, Scotland, and offers a classic links golf experience. It is 5,134 yards long from the back tees and has a par of 67.

This historic course was designed under the oversight of the club committee and built by greenkeeper William Logan and his team. The course is suitable for golfers of all skill levels. It is a great choice for those who want to play a real Scottish links course that is not too long.

Layout of Gullane No.3 Golf Course

The course is easy to get around and offers nice views. The opening three holes and closing three sit on the flatter terrain south of the main A198 road into Gullane. This makes a six-hole loop for time-conscious players.

The middle section ascends the lower slopes of Gullane Hill before descending toward Aberlady Bay. These holes have different elevations and offer coastal vistas across the Firth of Forth and the nearby nature reserve.

Despite its shorter length, Gullane No.3 Golf Course can still be challenging. Instead of needing to hit the ball very far, golfers need to be accurate.

Firm, fast-running fairways, penal rough, revetted pot bunkers, and compact greens demand accuracy. The greens are small, so careful aim is important, especially when the wind is strong.

Skilled golfers will find that their long shots are tested, and everyone will need good short-game skills around the small greens, which are considered the best at Gullane. Higher-handicap golfers benefit from opportunities to score pars or achieve personal bests.

The course ensures enjoyment for every visitor to Gullane No. 3 Golf Course in East Lothian.

Signature Holes at Gullane No.3

Some holes on the course are especially memorable. The second hole, a par 3, is a challenge early in the round. It is well bunkered, with a green that slopes away; it requires immediate focus and distance control.

Hole 7 starts from a high tee, one of the course’s most panoramic views over Luffness New Golf Club and Aberlady Bay. Here, golfers need to hit over bunkers to a sloped green.

The fifteenth hole is a downhill par 3 with a bowl-shaped green that collects well-aimed shots. From this hole, you can see the Village of Golf and the Lammermuir Hills. Wind conditions can turn this hole from a long iron to a putter.

Hole 17 is the only part of Gullane’s original layout that remains. It requires an uphill tee shot close to the left side, then an accurate shot over a dip to reach the raised green.
