Kristianstad Golf Club
Overview
Kristianstad Golf Club is located in the coastal town of Åhus in southern Sweden. This club is one of the oldest and most respected golf clubs in the country, having been established in 1924. As the sixth club to join the Swedish Golf Federation, it has a rich history.
Kristianstad Golf Club features two 18-hole championship courses: the East Course and the West Course. Both are surrounded by lovely sandy dunes, old forests, and rolling hills. This makes it a great choice for golfers who want a fun and challenging experience.
In 2023 and 2024, Kristianstad Golf Club was recognised as Sweden’s Best Golf Course by the World Golf Awards, and it has also received a nomination for 2025. Whether you’re a new golfer or a pro, you’ll find something special here!
East Course
The East Course is a par-72 golf course that features sandy soil. Its design gives players a feel similar to links-style golf, with bumpy fairways and open, windy sections. It started as a nine-hole course back in 1942, created by Rafael Sundblom, and was later expanded to 18 holes in 1968 by Douglas Brasier. The course has been updated over the years, with renovations by Pierre Fulke and Adam Mednickson in 2016. It measures about 6,000 meters from the yellow tees and has a mix of open holes that face the wind and quiet, tree-lined areas nestled in a historic plantation. The shorter par-4 holes challenge players to focus on accuracy rather than strength, while the par-5 holes at the 1st and 10th holes offer chances for strategic play.
West Course
The West Course, also a par-72, stretches up to 6,800 meters and follows an interesting layout inspired by Muirfield. The front nine runs in a clockwise loop, while the back nine goes counterclockwise. Designed in 2006 by Tommy Nordström and rebuilt by Pierre Fulke in 2021, this course includes six par-3s, five par-5s, and seven par-4s. It’s on sandy soil, giving it a clean, simple look that enhances the feel of Skåne’s coastal weather.
Course Challenges
Playing on the best golf courses in Skåne comes with its own set of challenges. One big challenge is the wind, which can make playing on the West Course hard. The course has two different loops that require players to adjust their shots based on the wind direction. The East Course is all about accuracy, featuring fairway bunkers, uneven areas around the greens, and water hazards that make it tough to score well.
Both courses are designed to make you think carefully about your shots; instead of thick rough, they use closely mowed areas to catch wayward drives. From the championship tees, the West Course is tough, with a stroke index of 76. This makes it one of the hardest courses in Sweden, where choosing the right club and managing the course well are key to doing well.
Signature Holes
The signature holes on their golf courses make every game special, especially the last three holes (14-16) on the East Course. These holes are par-4s and par-3s surrounded by beautiful trees and a winding stream that was redesigned in 2016 to make it even more enjoyable to play. You’ll need to be precise with your shots to avoid the water and narrow fairways. Many golfers say this is the most unforgettable and challenging part of the course.
Over on the West Course, the par-5 14th hole offers a unique story. It was built on a former dump site that has been transformed into green space. This hole mixes environmental restoration with exciting chances for players to take risks.
