Lee Westwood Filly Course

Overview

The Lee Westwood Filly Course at Close House is a great place for golfers of all skill levels. Located within the Close House Estate near Newcastle, this 18-hole parkland layout delivers stunning views across the Tyne Valley.

This 18-hole course provides a strategic and enjoyable test. Whether you want a memorable day out, a group game, or a course that is both challenging and easy to enjoy, the Filly is one of the best golf courses in the North East of England.

Lee Westwood Filly Course Layout and Design

The Filly Course was redesigned by Scott Macpherson and opened in 2014 by Lee Westwood. It is 6,034 yards long from the medal tees with a par of 70.

The course is in a parkland setting with undulating terrain and two man-made lakes that add visual appeal and strategic depth.

You need to hit accurate tee shots, or the bunkers and uneven ground will punish mistakes. The sloped greens make putting more difficult, but reward players who hit good approach shots.

Challenges

The Filly Course balances playability with challenge. Golfers encounter uphill and downhill holes, which can be tiring and require careful club selection. There are risk-reward opportunities created by the lakes and bunkering.

The redesign introduced new tees, greens, and bunkers that enhance strategic play without overwhelming mid- to high-handicappers. The course rewards positioning over pure power, making it ideal for players wanting an engaging, varied round.

Facilities at Close House Golf Club

Close House has great facilities for golfers. Golfers benefit from a modern clubhouse, a driving range, pitching and chipping zones, and putting greens. Buggy and club hire are available, alongside lessons at the on-site Golf Academy.

The hotel and friendly service make it a good choice for golf breaks, business events, or celebrations. Staff keep the course in top shape, maintaining green fairways and smooth greens all season.

Hosted Tournaments at Lee Westwood Filly Course

The Lee Westwood Filly Course is part of Close House’s strong history with golf tournaments. Close House hosted the Betfred British Masters on the European Tour (now DP World Tour) in 2017 and 2020.
