Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course
Overview
Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club offers a world-class links golf experience on Scotland’s west coast. Set hard against the Atlantic Ocean on the Kintyre Peninsula, this award-winning course shares scenic views with the historic Machrihanish Golf Club. Designed by David McLay Kidd, it opened in 2009 as a rare modern addition to Scottish links golf.
Layout and Challenges
Machrihanish Dunes sits on linksland protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Only a small part of its 259 acres was altered during construction, preserving the natural contours of the dunes and terrain.
The par-72, 7,175-yard (from the back tees) layout features six greens and five tees at the ocean’s edge. It challenges golfers to think about their shots and adapt to changing winds and slopes.
The undulating fairways, firm conditions, and strategic routing reward precise play, adaptability to wind, and short-game ability. Golfers encounter elevation changes, natural hazards, and holes that test every aspect of the game amid stunning coastal scenery.
Signature Holes
The course offers a mix of different holes. Early holes introduce players to the dunescape and the proximity to the ocean.
Standout par-3s, including the 5th and 6th, deliver memorable tests with sea views and complex surrounds. Longer par-5s require strategic positioning across heaving terrain. Select par-4s combine risk-reward opportunities with approaches to boldly contoured greens.
The closing stretch provides a strong finish, blending challenge with the joy of links golf played in its purest form.
Facilities
Machrihanish Dunes has practice areas like a driving range and a putting green.
The resort offers stone cottages, two hotels (The Ugadale Hotel and The Royal Hotel), five places to eat and drink with local food, and a spa.
A free shuttle runs between the hotels, cottages, and golf course from April to September. These amenities make it a good spot for golf breaks in Scotland.
