Miklagard Golf Course
Overview
Nestled in the countryside of Kløfta, just 20 minutes from Oslo and only a 10-minute drive from Gardermoen International Airport, Miklagard Golf Course is one of the best golf courses in Norway. This 18-hole championship course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. It combines a wide, open links style with the cosy feel of a park, making it a fun place for golfers who want a challenge near Oslo. Stretching 6,765 meters from the championship tees, this par-72 course is inspired by Norse mythology. Each hole is named after a Viking king or god, giving golfers a unique and exciting taste of Norway’s Viking history.
A Strategic Layout
Miklagard is located in a farming area with rolling hills and changes in elevation, which makes it great for a fun and strategic game of golf. The front nine holes take you through open fields, while the back nine moves into a wooded area where you’ll need to be careful around water hazards and thick grasses. You can choose from five different tee options on each hole. Beginners can use the easier forward tees, while experienced players can challenge themselves with the more difficult black tees.
Recent renovations in 2019 have made Miklagard even better. There’s a new design for the first hole and five brand-new holes that add to the excitement. This golf course is now considered one of the best in Norway, and it offers lots of chances for different rounds of play. The season runs from early May to late October, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful fairways, especially under the special midnight sun.
Course Challenges
Miklagard stands out as one of the toughest golf courses in Norway because it requires both power and skill. The course has big elevation changes that make you hit strong drives. Its long layout can really challenge golfers who miss their shots. The greens are some of the fastest and smoothest in Europe, but they are also hard, surrounded by deep bunkers that can catch wayward shots. The hilly terrain adds to the challenge, with many holes featuring doglegs next to lakes. There are areas where the wind can really affect your game. However, players who think carefully and are patient will find their efforts rewarded, making Miklagard a popular choice for golfers looking for a challenge in Scandinavia.
Signature Holes
Miklagard’s signature holes capture its mythical essence. The par-4 7th, “Odin’s Eye,” demands a daring tee shot over a yawning chasm, with a blind approach to a tiered green. Hole 12, “Thor’s Hammer,” features a dramatic elevated tee box overlooking a valley, where bunkers lurk like ancient runes. Finally, the par-3 16th, “Freyja’s Whisper,” plays temptingly short but over a pond, testing nerve with its sloping, flower-fringed target. These Norse-themed golf holes not only challenge but also immerse players in Viking lore, turning each swing into a saga.

At Miklagard Golf Club, they offer more than just great golf. The modern clubhouse is a perfect spot for socialising.
