O’Meara

Overview

The O’Meara Parkland Golf Course at Carton House delivers a classic parkland golf course experience in County Kildare.
Designed by 1998 Open Champion and US Masters Champion Mark O’Meara, this layout remains full of challenges while highlighting the beauty and history of the Carton House estate.
Measuring 7,165 yards from the blue championship tees and playing to a par of 73, the O’Meara attracts more than 30,000 golfers every season.
Located in Maynooth, it is only 25 minutes from Dublin Airport and the city centre, making it one of the most accessible championship golf courses near Dublin.

Layout of the O’Meara Course

Golfers meander through woodlands and along the River Rye before sending the ball over the water. The routing takes full advantage of the undulating terrain and mature trees that define this demesne.

Fairways flow naturally across the land, creating a traditional parkland feel that balances openness with tree-lined corridors. The design brings the beauty and history of the Carton House estate to the fore at every turn.

O’Meara Course Challenges

While many see the O’Meara as the more approachable of Carton House’s two championship courses, it still has its challenges. Classically designed fairway bunkers and deep rough penalise wayward drives.

Greenside bunkers and sloped greens require precise approach play. Water hazards become increasingly influential on the later holes, particularly along the River Rye.

The course tests your accuracy and choices, rather than pure length. This makes it suitable for all skill levels, but still a real challenge from the championship tees.

Concentration is essential, especially as the terrain becomes more varied on the closing stretch.

Memorable Holes on the O’Meara Course

The most memorable stretch of the course is holes 14 to 16. These holes are scenic and put pressure on scoring.

The 14th hole is a medium-length par 3. You tee off from an elevated tee to a green almost encircled by a loop of the River Rye. Shell Cottage and mature trees add to the view.

The 15th hole is a long par 5 that crosses the river twice between the tee and the green. It offers risk-reward opportunities for those prepared to attack.

The 16th hole requires a shot of about 150 to 160 yards over water to a tightly defended green with limited bail-out options.

The 18th hole is a great way to finish, with the historic manor house, lake, and boathouse making for a beautiful view.
