Plantation Course

Overview

The Plantation Course at Sea Island is known as one of the best golf courses in Georgia. It combines classic style with modern playability. Redesigned in 2019 by Davis Love III and Mark Love, this par-72 championship layout draws inspiration from Walter Travis’s original 1928 nine-hole design.

Stretching to about 7,060 yards from the back tees, it features a tree-lined, open parkland setting. It sits among tidal creeks, lakes, and woodland, making it an interesting place for golfers of all skill levels.

Course Layout of the Plantation Course at Sea Island

The Plantation Course at Sea Island has 18 holes designed for players of all skill levels.

The front nine is about 3,464 yards from the blue tees. It has wide fairways and par fives that are easier to reach, like Hole 4 (569 yards), with its central bunkers and lake hazards.

The back nine is about 3,207 yards. It has shorter holes you can reach in one shot, like Hole 10 (283 yards), as well as some longer ones.

Tee options range from black (over 7,000 yards) to gold (shorter for all skill levels), so everyone can enjoy playing. Traditional touches, like bulkheads and railroad ties, add to the course’s look and challenge.

Course Challenges

Golfers at the Plantation Course at Sea Island face a course that is both fun and challenging. There are fewer bunkers and a more open feel than older versions. It’s still tough because of wavy greens, water on 10 holes, and out-of-bounds areas.

Wind sometimes makes it harder to play the par fives that you can reach in fewer shots. Features like the “Principal’s Nose” bunkers on Hole 10 and the punch bowl green on Hole 13 call for careful shots.

Despite these challenges, the design prioritises playability, with easier options for less experienced players. This makes it a great choice for golfers who want a course that is both testing and forgiving.

Signature Holes on the Plantation Course

Some of the most talked-about parts of the Plantation Course at Sea Island are its signature holes that provide memorable moments.

Hole 10 is a short par-4 at 283 yards. Players can try to hit the green in one shot over water, but “Principal’s Nose” bunkers make it hard. Hole 13 is a 422-yard par-4. This tests accuracy with a lake left and out-of-bounds right, leading to a bowl-shaped green.

The finishing Hole 18 is a long one at 517 yards. Players can try to reach the green in two shots, but water and bunkers make it risky. This final hole often decides who wins in a match.
