Portal Premier Golf Course

Overview

The Premier Course at Macdonald Portal Hotel is a great place for golfers. Opened in 1990 and designed by Andrew Murray, this 18-hole course is 6,538 yards long from the back tees. It has a par of 71 and a standard scratch score of 73.

Course Layout Portal Premier Course

The Premier Course at Macdonald Portal Hotel is designed like an adventure in nature. It starts off easy with a short par-4 hole, then quickly turns into a challenge for golfers. The fairways twist through old trees and beautiful views, asking players to think carefully about their tee shots on hard dog-leg par-4s and reachable par-5s.

You’ll also notice big changes in elevation—like the steep drop on the fourth hole, followed by flatter spots on holes 4 to 6. Be prepared for a tough climb on the uphill 11th hole, which is known as the hardest hole on the course.

Course Challenges

Playing the Premier Course golf challenges is no easy task! There are many obstacles to overcome. Bunkers carefully protect the approach to the greens, while water hazards, like winding streams and ponds, can surprise you on holes 16 and 17. You’ll also need to be careful near the out-of-bounds areas that run along the tighter fairways.

Wind often blows across the open ridges, making it important to control your fades and draws. The sloping greens add another layer of difficulty. For example, on hole six (Twin Oaks), the slopes can funnel your ball to the left, testing your ability to recover and your mental strength.

At 6,538 yards, the course offers some forgiveness for mid-handicappers but can be quite tough for those who play aggressively. This means that every round at the Cheshire golf course feels well-earned!

Signature Holes at Portal Premier Course

No visit to Portal Premier Course is complete without enjoying its signature holes. The 18th hole, called “Your Round,” is a par-5 that curves to the left. If you hit your tee shot to the right, you can take advantage of the slope to make a daring shot over water to reach the green, which is protected by the clubhouse.

The second hole, known as “Cedar Hill,” is the longest at over 500 yards. To have a shot at an eagle here, you’ll need to hit a straight drive as you go downhill. For some excitement, try the 15th hole, “Platt’s Wood.” You’ll have to thread your shot through trees to reach the green below. The seventh hole, “Quarry,” drops into a rock amphitheatre, and you’ll need to use an extra club because the par-3 green is elevated.

Don’t miss the 16th hole with its watery dog-leg, and the 17th hole, a short par-3 that goes over water. These holes add challenges and make golfing in Cheshire a legendary experience!
