Prince Bishops’ Course

Overview

Play golf at the Prince Bishops’ Course at Ramside Hall Hotel, a championship parkland course in Durham. This historic course, designed by Jonathan Gaunt, gives you a challenging golfing experience in open countryside with stunning views of Durham Cathedral.

Layout and Challenges on the Prince Bishops’ Course

The Prince Bishops’ Course spans 6,851 yards from the championship tees, a par-72 layout (often listed at 6,581–6,900 yards depending on tee selection). It features wide fairways that welcome players of varying abilities while demanding precision.

There are 16 ponds and streams that make the course interesting. Golfers must navigate reachable par 5s, driveable par 4s, and testing short holes that require every club in the bag.

The course is set in parkland with sloped greens and numerous bunkers that test accuracy. Players enjoy multiple playing options on each hole: a conservative route for safety or bolder lines for lower scores.

The course is designed to be an engaging, fair experience that rewards thoughtful shot-making. The mix of short and long holes ensures a complete test, from precise wedge play to powerful drives.

Signature Holes

Several holes define the character of the Prince Bishops’ Course.

The 9th hole, a par 5 stretching 465 yards, presents a downhill challenge often cited as a signature test. Precision is essential to avoid hazards while positioning for an approach to the green.

The 3rd (99 yards) and 7th (87 yards) demand pinpoint accuracy over water or uneven terrain. The longer holes give you a chance to hit the ball far and plan your shots. The view of the cathedral in the background makes every round memorable.
