SCHLOSS Roxburghe Golf Course

Overview

Located in the Scottish Borders, SCHLOSS Roxburghe Golf Course is one of the best inland golf courses in Scotland. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 1997, this championship 18-hole course offers a great golfing experience. It winds through beech woodlands and along the banks of the River Teviot, near Kelso.

The course combines natural beauty with smart design, making it one of Scotland’s top 10 inland courses. Whether you’re a pro golfer or simply enjoy playing for fun, SCHLOSS Roxburghe offers memorable rounds of golf amidst rolling hills and historic scenery, including views of the grand Floors Castle.

Course Layout

The SCHLOSS Roxburghe Golf Course is a beautiful par-72 course that stretches up to 7,111 yards from the championship tees. For beginners or those looking for an easier game, there are shorter tee options that go down to 5,660 yards. This course uses the natural hills and valleys of the estate, offering four different tee positions on each hole to match all skill levels.

The course features large, well-shaped greens that require precise shots to reach, along with strategically placed bunkers that reflect the unique style of its designer. The layout includes changes in elevation and mature trees, giving players a smooth experience as they move from open fairways to narrower, tree-lined paths. Overall, every hole on this course tells its own story, giving a mix of challenges and the peaceful charm of the Scottish Borders.

Course Challenges

What makes SCHLOSS Roxburghe stand out among golf courses in Scotland is its perfect mix of challenge and fun. It rewards players who take daring shots while also being forgiving for those who make a mistake. From the high tees, golfers need to hit their drivers over wide fairways and gentle hills, which tests their accuracy and ability to control distance. The large, sloping greens are often protected by deep bunkers, making putting and chipping tricky. If you’re not careful, a good approach shot could lead to a three-putt.

Water hazards, especially near the River Teviot, add a layer of risk that can make the game more exciting. Players will also have to think about their club choices due to the natural hills on almost every hole. Despite these challenges, the course has multiple tee boxes and is in great shape, making it welcoming for golfers of all skill levels. Mid-handicappers can enjoy the beauty of the course without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a great place for corporate golf outings or solo rounds in the scenic Scottish Borders.

Signature Holes

A visit to SCHLOSS Roxburghe isn’t complete without playing its most famous hole: the par-5 14th, known as “The Viaduct.” This impressive hole stretches 575 yards alongside the River Teviot. On the left side, a steep bank and rushing water make this hole even more challenging. From the elevated tee, you get great views, but hitting a good drive requires skill to avoid the trees and land in a narrow area.

As you approach the green, you’ll see the historic Roxburgh Viaduct above you. More adventurous players might try to reach the green in two shots, but be careful! Bunkers and the river are waiting to catch those who are too bold. This hole captures the excitement of the course, mixing stunning views with clever strategy.

Other great holes include the downhill par-3 7th, called “Teviot View,” which has an elevated green overlooking the river, and the tough par-4 3rd, lined with dense beech trees. Each of these holes adds to the story of your round.
