Seaside Course
Overview
The Seaside Golf Course at Sea Island is one of the best links golf courses in Georgia, known for its beautiful scenery and strategic design.
This ocean-side layout often ranked among the nation’s best courses. Golfers enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean, tidal creeks, salt marshes, and sand dunes.
Built in 1929 by Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison, the course was redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1999, combining the Seaside and Marshside nines into a single 18-hole course.
The course is a par 70 and stretches up to 7,005 yards from the back tees. It welcomes players of all skill levels and offers an enjoyable but challenging round.
Layout of the Seaside Golf Course at Sea Island
The course has well-kept fairways and greens, native grasses, wildflowers, and open sand dunes. Golfers play across different terrain, including marshlands and water hazards, creating a Scottish links-style experience.
The first nine holes require careful shots, with doglegs and protected greens. The back nine opens up to more open holes influenced by the ocean.
Yardages vary across tee options: the Blue tees are longer (e.g., Hole 1 at 400 yards), while the Gold tees are shorter. Everyone can find a comfortable challenge. The course design encourages smart play in a scenic coastal area.
Challenges at Seaside Golf Course
Golfers looking for a challenging golf course in Georgia will find Seaside demanding yet fair. Winds from the Atlantic Ocean change the course each day. Players must adjust and make smart choices.
There are many challenges, such as deep clamshell bunkers, tidal creeks, and marsh areas, that make it harder if you miss a shot. Water is a big part of holes like the par-4 second and par-5 seventh, testing recovery skills.
The course’s slope rating of 138 underscores its difficulty. It remains enjoyable, as noted by touring professional Davis Love III, who praises its “matchless holes.” Careful and accurate shots are needed to do well here.
Signature Holes
Some of the signature holes at Seaside Golf Course include Hole 13, a 409-yard par 4. A marsh lines the left side, and three bunkers on the right make the first shot hard. The second shot goes uphill to a bunker-guarded green.
Hole 16, a 378-yard par 4, makes players decide whether to risk going near a tidal creek on the left or play safely to the right, which makes the next shot longer. Hole 18, at 439 yards, requires length and accuracy to stay out of the bunkers along the fairway.
These holes show off the course’s strategic depth and scenic views.
