Course Challenges at Southerness Golf Club
Southerness is a unique links golf course on the Solway Coast. It stands out because of its constant exposure to the weather. The course has eight par-4 holes that are over 400 yards long, which means you’ll need strong drives and smart approaches. There are also five challenging par-3 holes, with two of them over 200 yards, that really test your iron shots in the unpredictable coastal winds.
The landscape features hard bunkers and gentle slopes that can punish any wayward shots. However, the flat layout of the course helps keep fatigue away. Golfers playing at this Dumfries and Galloway course will experience a real test of links golf in Scotland. The wind can change how you play, turning simple holes into challenges that require you to be strong and adaptable.
Signature Holes
One of the best signature holes at Southerness is the 12th hole. This 421-yard par-4 hole has a dogleg to the left, making it the signature hole of the course. Players must carefully avoid bunkers on each side of the fairway before hitting an accurate shot towards the Solway Firth. The sea breeze adds a fun challenge!
Other signature holes include the long par-5 18th, which offers beautiful views of the estuary and rewards those who play boldly. There’s also the hard par-3 7th hole, where bushes on the sides make it very important to aim just right. These holes truly show what it’s like to play challenging links golf in Scotland at Southerness.
