The Bluff Course

Overview

The Bluff Course at Champions Retreat Golf Club, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, is a great nine-hole layout situated just outside Augusta, Georgia.

This championship-calibre course forms part of a unique 27-hole complex. Each nine bears the signature design of one of golf’s greatest players: Nicklaus (Bluff), Arnold Palmer (Island), and Gary Player (Creek).

Champions Retreat Bluff Course Layout and Design

The Bluff Course features natural elevation changes through forested ridges and pine trees, making it an interesting place to play golf.

Jack Nicklaus designed the course to use the contours to heighten both risk and reward, resulting in a varied routing that includes uphill and downhill shots, along with a balanced mix of right-to-left and left-to-right doglegs.

These nine holes require precision off the tee and thoughtful approach play, with uphill approaches and strategic hazards adding to the challenge. The length of each hole varies by tee. For example, Hole 1 (Par 4) is up to 432 yards, Hole 2 (Par 3) is up to 185 yards, Hole 3 (Par 4) is up to 423 yards, and Hole 4 (Par 4) is up to 467 yards.

The course has a mix of par 4s, par 3s, and par 5s, so players need to be accurate and think about their shots.

Course Challenges at Champions Retreat Bluff Course

Golfers encounter many elevation shifts that require careful club selection and positioning. Tree-lined fairways and natural wetlands can make shots harder. The greens have gentle curves and firm ground, so players need to be accurate. The course is fun for experienced golfers who want a good challenge.

Signature Holes

Some of the signature holes are tough par-3s and par-4s that make use of the land’s hills and dips. For example, the par-3 8th hole is hard because it leans toward the swampy left-side. The par-5 9th hole gives players a chance to finish strong if they take a risk. These holes show how Nicklaus designs courses that fit well with the natural land.

Facilities and Amenities

There are practice areas, a Grille House with farm-to-table dining, and a deck called the Bluff Overlook. The club offers guests a friendly, welcoming stay with excellent service and Southern hospitality.

The Bluff Course is well known for co-hosting the first 36 holes of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, along with the Island Nine. This tournament has been held here since it began. The course is about 14 to 15 miles from Augusta National Golf Club.
