The Nicklaus Course

Overview

The Nicklaus Course at Carden Park is one of Cheshire’s top championship golf courses. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, it opened in 1998.

The parkland layout is set in a 1,000-acre estate near Chester, with beautiful views of the Welsh hills. It is suitable for golfers of all skill levels and is known for its challenging layout that rewards accuracy and careful planning.

The Nicklaus Course Layout and Challenges

The Nicklaus Course is about 7,045 yards from the back tees with a par of 72. The course has a mix of different holes on gently undulating terrain.

The fairways are wide, making it easier to hit long shots, but there are also bunkers, water hazards, and mature trees that make shots harder and require accuracy.

The front nine winds around the historic estate, while the back nine gets more difficult, offering opportunities to take risks or play it safe. Multiple sets of tees ensure playability for beginners through low-handicap golfers.

The main challenges are lateral water hazards, bunkers guarding elevated or sloping greens, and holes that require accurate distance control.

Signature Holes at The Nicklaus Course

Some holes on the Nicklaus Course are memorable. The par-4 6th demands an accurate tee shot to avoid water on the left, with the green angled at 45 degrees for a testing approach.

Hole 7 presents a unique double-option layout: shorter hitters may play conservatively right. Bolder players carry a ditch to the left fairway for a shorter second shot.

The 15th hole is a favourite for many, with both a water hazard and a tree to watch out for.

The 17th hole stands out the most. It is a par-4 where long hitters can attempt a 250+ yard carry over hazards toward the green in front of the hotel. Or opt for the safer route, leaving a 130-yard approach.

The final 18th hole is a strong par-5 that provides an uphill finish back to the clubhouse with deep bunkers protecting the elevated green.
