The North Course
Overview
Explore the North Course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, a famous golf course in Carlsbad, California. This course offers a fun challenge and beautiful views of Southern California. It was recently redesigned by Gil Hanse and his partner Jim Wagner.
Course Layout & Design
This par-72 course can stretch up to 7,500 yards from the back tees and has six different tee options, making it perfect for golfers of all skill levels. You’ll find a nice variety of holes, including long par-5s that are over 600 yards, tough par-4s that go beyond 500 yards, and clever par-3s that require good aim and control.
The course is surrounded by mature trees, rolling fairways, and natural plants, giving it a park-like feel with some ups and downs on the land. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, the North Course is designed to be enjoyable for everyone!
Course Challenges
Golfers will find plenty of challenges on the North Course, making it a great choice for competitive play. The greens, made of Pure Distinction bentgrass, are firm and bouncy, which means that players need to hit accurate iron shots and be creative with their short game. If you miss the fairway, you’ll face deep bunkers and native areas that can make recovery tough. The wind can also add an extra level of difficulty, especially on the open holes.
For example, the long par-4 seventh hole measures 517 yards and requires strong, precise shots to avoid hazards. With a slope rating of 146 from the back tees, this course is definitely a challenge for advanced players. Success here often depends on making smart decisions, especially when it comes to taking risks. Players may go for aggressive shots that can lead to birdies, but be careful—one mistake could mean a bogey!
Signature Holes
The North Course is known for its amazing signature holes, making it a top choice for championship golf in Southern California. One standout hole is the par-3 16th, which measures 159 yards from the back tees. This hole features a green in front of a pond, along with bunkers that remind many of the famous 12th hole at Augusta National. It also brings to mind Tiger Woods’ memorable playoff shot during a PGA event.
Another hole is the par-3 eighth, called “Little Terror.” This challenging hole is 194 yards long and has a small plateau green surrounded by steep hills, requiring very accurate shots to score well.
The North Course also offers some drivable par-4 holes. The 11th hole is 359 yards, and the 15th is 365 yards long. These holes give big hitters a chance to score an eagle but come with the risk of fairway bunkers and deep traps near the greens.
Finally, the 14th hole is a 517-yard par-4 that many say is the best on the course. It includes a restored creek that makes players think carefully about how to play around it.
