The Ocean Course
Overview
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina is a fantastic golf course created by Pete Dye and his wife, Alice Dye. This par-72 course can stretch up to 7,876 yards from the back tees and offers an oceanfront golfing experience. With ten holes right next to the Atlantic Ocean and eight more running alongside it, golfers can enjoy stunning views of the ocean waves and beautiful sand dunes.
It’s considered one of the most scenic and challenging seaside golf courses in the Northern Hemisphere. The course is raised above the natural dune line, thanks to Alice Dye’s idea, which allows for clear views of the coast while blending perfectly with the island’s rough landscape.
Course Layout
The golf course has a variety of holes that challenge golfers of all skill levels and encourage smart play while navigating natural obstacles. Starting with Hole 1, a par-4 that is 395 yards long, players must hit carefully down narrow fairways surrounded by sand dunes and marshes. This hole sets the stage for the need to be precise right from the start.
As golfers move through the front nine, they will play amidst dunes and oak trees. At Hole 2, a par-5 measuring 543 yards, players face tough choices as they must decide whether to risk carrying their ball over a marsh to reach a raised green.
The excitement picks up on the back nine, where the influence of the ocean becomes stronger, leading to some thrilling finishes.
Course Challenges
The course faces many challenges because of the unpredictable Atlantic winds. These winds can change how players choose their clubs, sometimes needing to adjust by as much as eight clubs from one day to the next. Designed by Pete Dye, the course features two layouts that help deal with the shifting winds coming from the east and west. It has various hazards like waste bunkers, pot bunkers, elevated greens, and water traps that can make a bad shot even worse. The paspalum grass used on the course makes it tricky, as players must be ready to adapt to different conditions, from hard fairways to soft greens.
Signature Holes
The Ocean Course has some famous holes that make it a special place to play golf. Hole 14 is a par-3 that is 194 yards long. It is the most beautiful and challenging hole. The green is high up and open to ocean winds, surrounded by sandy dunes, offering great views but leaving little room for mistakes.
Hole 17 is another par-3, measuring 221 yards. Players must hit their ball over water to reach a narrow green, which is protected by deep bunkers and sea oats. The wind and the placement of the pin can make this hole really tough.
Finally, Hole 18 is a par-4 that stretches 439 yards. This hole requires a strong drive along the dunes. After that, players need to make a careful approach to a green that sits right next to the ocean, providing an exciting end to any round of golf.
Facilities
The Ocean Course offers more than just a great golf experience. It features facilities that make it perfect for a golfing holiday. The large clubhouse includes the elegant Atlantic Room for dining and the Ryder Cup Bar, where you can relax after your game. There are also flexible event spaces for tournaments or corporate gatherings.
The pro shop is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and has a wide range of top-quality golf clothing, gear, and special Ocean Course merchandise like logoed hats, shirts, and art prints. Plus, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort has luxury cottages for overnight stays, practice areas, and professional instruction. All these amenities ensure that visitors have a fantastic experience at one of South Carolina’s best golf destinations.
Hosted Tournaments
The Ocean Course is a golf course with a rich history of hosting important tournaments. It was the site of the 1991 Ryder Cup, which is often called the “War by the Shore,” where Team USA won in a thrilling match.
Later, in 2007, it hosted the Senior PGA Championship. In 2012, Rory McIlroy won the PGA Championship here, and he played incredibly well. The course was once again in the spotlight during the 2021 PGA Championship, where Phil Mickelson made history by winning at age 50, becoming the oldest major champion ever.
Looking ahead, The Ocean Course is to host the PGA Championship again in 2031, making it one of the few places to hold this event three times. These tournaments show that The Ocean Course is a top choice for major golf events at Kiawah Island.
