The Old Course
Overview
The Old Course at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is an 18-hole championship golf course in North West England. The parkland course is a par 72 and measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees (Black tees at approximately 7,010 yards). It offers a fun and challenging round for golfers of all skill levels, near Liverpool and Southport.
The Old Course Layout and Challenges
The Old Course is a modern championship golf course that runs through mature woodland, featuring tree-lined fairways, water hazards, and well-placed bunkers. The relatively flat terrain and good drainage ensure year-round playability, whether walking or using a buggy.
Multiple tee options, from around 5,200 yards (Blue tees) to over 7,000 yards, make this course accessible while maintaining its challenge for low handicappers.
Playing accurately and course management are more important than pure distance. USGA-specification greens offer consistent putting surfaces. The hazards are placed to reward precise shot-making across a balanced mix of holes.
Long, par-5s test power and strategy, whereas precision-based par-3s require perfect club selection. The layout forms one large anti-clockwise loop, creating a flowing round that builds in excitement.
Signature Holes on The Old Course
The signature hole is the par-3 16th, a short hole framed by water and natural surroundings. Club selection becomes critical here, with wind and pin placement adding layers of difficulty. This hole gained fame when local hero Tommy Fleetwood achieved his first hole-in-one on it.
Memorable risk-and-reward opportunities appear on several strong par 5s, but mistakes can lead to trouble in the narrow fairways or hazards. These holes contribute to the course’s reputation for testing every facet of the game, from driving accuracy to approach shots and short-game finesse.
