Zala Springs Golf Course

Overview

Zala Springs Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is Hungary’s best golf course and one of Central Europe’s finest championship venues. Set in the scenic Zala Valley near Lake Balaton and Hévíz, this 18-hole, par-72 course spans 6,351 meters and blends with rolling hills, vineyards, nature reserves, and lakes. Built to USGA standards and opened in 2015, it offers a great golfing experience for players of all skill levels.

Zala Springs Golf Course Layout and Playability

Zala Springs golf course is designed to be both beautiful and fun to play. With four sets of tees, it is suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced golfers. This ensures accessibility while maintaining challenge.

The fairways are wide, making it easier for players, but their contours, slopes, and short-grass surrounds still require precision. Players can approach greens aerially or along the ground; each hole offers choices that make the game interesting.

The course has a balanced mix of five par-5s for long hitters, alongside challenging par-3s and par-4s. There are water hazards, including a notable carry over a lake on the par-3 12th hole (168 meters from the back tees).

Signature Holes and Challenges

Signature holes highlight the course’s character. Hole 3, a lengthy par-5 (up to 567 meters), ranks as the index 1 handicap hole and tests distance and accuracy. Hole 12, a scenic par-3 over water, is one of the most memorable and challenging.

The 9th and 18th holes, both par-5s, offer closing opportunities with strategic risk-reward elements. Throughout the round, golfers encounter varied challenges, from elevation changes and vineyard-framed vistas that look like Tuscany to bunkers that punish errant shots while rewarding well-placed drives and approaches.

Facilities at Zala Springs

Besides the course, Zala Springs offers great practice areas, including a driving range with 40 open-air and 12 covered bays, putting, pitching, and chipping greens, plus a bunker area.

Additional amenities include a pro shop, rental equipment (bags, buggies, trolleys, and electric carts), dressing rooms, and the Zala Springs Bistro. A halfway house called “The Cup” is for golfers to stop for a break during their round.
