Peak vs Off-Peak: When to Tee Off in the US for Best Value & Conditions

At Find A Golf Break, we know that timing is everything when it comes to booking golf holidays in the US. Not only can the right dates save you money, but they can also make the difference between a good trip and a truly unforgettable one.

Whether you’re chasing sun, perfect course conditions or unbeatable value, knowing when to go is key.

Planning Your Golf Holiday: Weather, Seasons and Value

The US is huge, and the climate varies widely from north to south, east to west. So, when you travel makes a big difference.

In the northern states like New York, Illinois, Michigan and Oregon, the golf season typically runs from April to October. This window brings warmer temperatures, longer days and lush fairways. Peak season is usually late spring through summer. If you’re visiting during these months, expect lively clubhouses, fully staffed resorts and pristine course conditions. The downside? Prices are higher and courses are busier.

If you want better value, try late spring (April to early June) or early autumn (September to mid-October). These are shoulder seasons, meaning you can still enjoy excellent weather but with fewer crowds and better rates. Courses are still in great shape, and hotel availability is better. You might catch some fall colours in the northeast or cooler mornings in the Midwest.

In the southern states like Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Arizona, golf is possible almost all year. Winter months (December to February) are actually peak season here, especially in desert areas like Scottsdale or Palm Springs. While the north is covered in snow, these destinations are basking in sunshine and mild temps. This makes them ideal for escaping the cold.

But with demand comes cost. Winter golf in the south comes with higher rates, especially around Christmas and New Year. To save, consider the late summer and early autumn months (August to October). Yes, it’s warmer, but many courses drop their rates and offer summer maintenance specials. Just aim for early tee times to beat the heat.

State-by-State: When to Go

Florida: Peak season is from January to April. The weather is mild and dry, perfect for golf. Prices rise with the snowbirds, though. Off-peak in summer (June to August) brings heat and humidity but also great deals and quiet courses.

Arizona: The desert climate means you can play nearly all year. Winter (November to March) is peak, with perfect temps and blue skies. Summer is hot but dry. If you don’t mind early mornings and a bit of heat, June to September offers huge savings.

California: Coastal areas like San Diego are ideal in spring and autumn, avoiding both foggy winters and crowded summers. Inland areas like Palm Springs follow a similar pattern to Arizona.

South Carolina (Myrtle Beach): Best months are March to May and September to November. Warm without being oppressive. Peak is spring, but autumn often offers better value.

Texas: Great from October to April. Summers are extremely hot. For the best mix of weather and value, aim for March or November.

Nevada (Las Vegas): Playable year-round, but best from October to April. Summer is sweltering, but resorts run aggressive specials and twilight rates.

New York & Northeast: Stick to May through October. June and September are ideal. Autumn offers stunning foliage and comfortable playing conditions.

Midwest (Illinois, Michigan): The window is shorter here, May to September is prime. July is peak for weather, but late May and early September offer better prices.

More Than Just Tee Times

Our US golf holidays are built for comfort and convenience. We offer all-inclusive golf breaks that cover your accommodation, green fees and extras like spa access or guided tours. Many resorts allow you to step straight onto the course from your room. That means sunrise rounds or twilight tee times are yours to choose.

And when you’re not golfing? Expect first-class dining, relaxing spas, pools and even activities for the family. You’ll find something for everyone, whether it’s a couples retreat or a group golf trip.

Timing your trip can also open up bonus perks. Travelling off-peak often means better room upgrades, more tee time flexibility and resort credits. It’s not just about saving money; it’s about getting more out of every part of your holiday.
